PM reassures Gujarat CM on safety of People of Indian origin in Kenya

The Prime Minister has said that the government is closely monitoring the situation in Kenya regarding the problems faced by the Gujarati community and that it had already been in touch with the Kenyan authorities and the Indian origin community in Kenya. Replying to the Gujarat Chief Minister's letter Dr. Manmohan Singh reassured him that the External Affairs Ministry has been asked to take immediate action.

The text of the Prime Minister's letter written to Shri Narendra Modi yesterday is as follows:

Dear Shri Modi

I have received your letter of 31 December 2007 regarding the problems being faced by the Gujarati community in Kenya. I have asked the Ministry of External Affairs to take immediate action.

Meanwhile, I have been informed by that our High Commission in Kenya is already in touch with the Indian origin community.

I would like to assure you that the Government of India is closely monitoring the situation in Kenya, and is also in touch with the Kenyan authorities to ensure that the people of Indian origin are provided adequate safety.
