A Delegation from Orissa calls on PM

A group of Christian community leaders led by Archbishop Rev. Vincent M. Conscessao called on the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan singh this evening in connection with the recent incidents in Orissa. The Prime Minister expressed his deep concern at the recent incidents and assured them of necessary action in restoring communal peace and harmony in the affected areas. Central para-military forces have been sent to the State and the Prime Minister today reviewed the situation while speaking to the Chief Minister of Orissa in the morning.

The Prime Minister assured the delegation that any attempts to disturb communal peace and the secular fabric of the country would be sternly dealt with. He said that the Government would take steps to provide full security and protect the religious freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution to all citizens. The Prime Minister assured the delegation that steps would be taken to offer appropriate compensation for damage to property. He also said that a Union minister will visit the State in this regard.
