Cabinet Resolution on death of Shri Chandra Shekhar, Former Prime Minister of India

The Union Cabinet met here today and adopted the following Condolence Resolution condoling the death of former Prime Minister, Shri Chandra Shekhar.

"The Cabinet expresses profound sorrow at the demise of Shri Chandra Shekhar, former Prime Minister of India, on 8th July, 2007.

Shri Chandra Shekhar was an eminent parliamentarian, social worker and able administrator who has left his imprint on every aspect of our national life.

Born on 1st July 1927 in Ibrahimpatti in District Ballia of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Chandra Shekhar received his education in Allahabad University. He entered the Parliament as a Member of the Rajya Sabha in 1962. He first became a member of the Lok Sabha in 1977 where he served for eight terms. Shri Chandra Shekhar steered the nation as Prime Minister from November 1990 to June 1991.

Shri Chandra Shekhar was a truly secular nationalist and a man of the people committed to their welfare and well-being. He was known for his conviction, courage and integrity. Throughout his life, he devoted himself to espouse the cause of the downtrodden, ad worked relentlessly for rapid social change.

Shri Chandra Shekhar was in many ways a grassroots worker deeply interested in primary education and health services. He undertook a long padyatra across the country in 1983 to establish rapport with the masses and understand their problems. A reflective writer, Shri Chandra Shekhar was also the Founder - Editor and Chairman of the Editorial Advisory Board of 'Young Indian'.

In his passing away, the nation has lost an eminent son, a wise national leader and a statesman.

The Cabinet deeply mourns the sad demise of Shri Chandra Shekhar, and extends sincere condolences on behalf of the entire nation to the bereaved family."
