PM condoles the death of Surabala Bordoloi

The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has expressed grief on the demise of Smt. Surabala Bordoloi.

In a message, the Prime Minister said, "It is with profound sadness that I learnt of the demise of Smt. Surabala Bordoloi, one of the eminent personalities of Assam. She was a source of immense strength and support for her husband, the great leader, Bharat Ratna - Gopinath Bordoloi, who was instrumental in shaping Assam's destiny, before and after Independence. In her death, our country has lost an outstanding personality who made a significant contribution to the state of Assam as well as to our country.

Smt. Bordoloi was a highly respected, dignified and pious lady who made great sacrifices along with the great Gopinath Bordoloi during the freedom struggle. She preached and practised Gandhian philosophy and showed concern for the people of Assam, particularly the poor and downtrodden. We all recall the contribution of Smt. Surabala and Bharat Ratna, Gopinath Bordoloi, both of whom were actively associated with progress of Assam. I extend my sincere condolences to the bereaved family and pray that the soul of the demised person rests in peace."
