PM condoles death of Shri Chanchal Sarkar

The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has expressed deep grief over the sad demise of Shri Chanchal Sarkar, a veteran journalist and former Director, Press Institute of India.

In a condolence message, the Prime Minister said, "A renowned name in the field of journalism, Shri Chanchal Sarkar made a mark as a journalist and significantly contributed to deepen and diversify the world of journalism through his numerous writings. His insightful write-ups and incisive comments on current affairs established his reputation as a great media personality. Maintaining high standards of writing, he established the traditions of excellence and guided the younger generation through his personal example. His articles in the leading international newspapers such as The Guardian and The Sunday Mail testified to his credibility outside our country. Fearlessly defending the freedom of the press he remained in the forefront to safeguard the journalistic domain from corrupt influences. His long record of service as an illustrious personality in the field of journalism constituted a glorious period of excellence. His role as the Director of the Press Institute of India has been widely acknowledged. He consolidated the Institute and gave it new directions for its onward progress. With his passing away India has lost a prominent media personality."

Praying for peace for the departed soul, the Prime Minister conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family and to his wide circle of friends and admirers.
