PM condemns assassination of Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar

The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh has condemned the assassination of the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister, Mr. Lakshman Kadirgamar. In a condolence message on the occasion, Dr. Manmohan Singh said:

"I have been deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic assassination of Mr.Lakshman Kadirgamar, the Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka. Foreign Minister Kadirgamar was a great son of Sri Lanka and a friend of India.

India condemns this premeditated act of violence and trusts that the perpetrators of the heinous act will be brought to justice. It is clear that terrorism and violence have no place in civilized societies. Foreign Minister Kadirgamar's death by an act of senseless violence is an irreparable loss not just to Sri Lanka, but to the entire region. I have spoken to President Kumaratunga and conveyed my condolences to her, and to the people of Sri Lanka. I also requested President Kumaratunga to convey my heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Kadirgamar."
