National Security Council discusses relations with Nepal

The National Security Council met here today to discuss bilateral relations with Nepal and the extant situation in Nepal. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh chaired the meeting of the National Security Council.

The NSC reviewed India-Nepal bilateral relations in the context of the domestic situation in Nepal. The Prime Minister reiterated India's stated position that constitutional monarchy and multi-party democracy are the twin pillars of stability in Nepal. He reiterated that disturbing this balance does not serve the long-term interest of the Nepalese people. He expressed the hope that the King will adhere to his commitments to restore the political process. The NSC reviewed the current security and political situation in Nepal and its implications for India's national security and for India-Nepal bilateral relations.

The meeting was attended by External Affairs Minister, Mr. Natwar Singh, Defence Minister, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, Home Minister, Mr. Shivraj Patil, National Security Advisor, Chief of Integrated Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister, Convenor, National Security Advisory Board and other senior officials of the Government of India.
