PM commissions first ever study of socio-economic status of Muslim community

The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, has constituted a high- level Committee to prepare a report on the social, economic and educational status of the Muslim community. The study will provide factual information to the Government, so that programmes and policies aimed at improving the social and economic status of the Muslim community can be better formulated and planned.

The HLC will be chaired by Justice Rajender Sachar and will include Shri Saiyid Hamid (Chancellor, Jamia Hamdard), Dr T.K. Oommen (JNU), Shri M.A. Basith (Govt of Karnataka), Dr Rakesh Basant (IIM- A), Dr Akhtar Majeed, (Jamia Hamdard). Dr Abu Saleh Shariff (NCAER) will be its Member-Secretary.

The study will obtain and analyse State-wise/district-wise data on the Muslim community; their occupational profile; relative income levels; relative educational and health indicators; share in employment in public and private sector; the community's access to finance and bank credit, municipal infrastructure; and other relevant data on the social and economic status of the community. The report of the Committee will be presented to Government within 15 months.
