Prime Minister meets Manipur leaders

The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, met a delegation of leaders from Manipur today. The delegation represented to the Prime Minister that the Armed Forces Special Provision Act (AFSPA) should be repealed. The Prime Minister assured them that the government will examine all aspects of their demand and requested them to continue their discussion with the Union Home Minister. Dr. Manmohan Singh said he will consider the idea of replacing the AFSPA with a more humane law that will address both the concerns of National Security and the rights of citizens.

The Prime Minister expressed the hope that peace and normalcy will be maintained in Manipur. He said he will visit Manipur later this month. Dr. Manmohan Singh said that his "hope and belief is that it will be possible to work together with the people of Manipur to write a new chapter in the history of the State."
