PM condoles the passing away of Kisan Leader Tikait

"I am deeply grieved to learn of the passing away of your father Chaudhary Mahendra Singh Tikait.

Chaudhary Tikait was the president of the Bharatiya Kisan Union, a non-political organization that he formed in 1986. Two years later he became a national figure after he organized the Meerut demonstration and gained concessions for the farmers.

Chaudhary Tikait's commitment to the welfare of farmers and to rural India was deep and unswerving. His work was a powerful influence across the country and inspired the formation of many other organizations devoted to the cause of farmers. Chaudhary Tikait was a fiercely independent man who resisted the pull of politics all his life. His work, his courage of conviction and his simplicity made him a unique leader who will be deeply missed in the years ahead.

On this sad occasion, I offer my condolences to Chaudhary Tikait's family members, friends and followers across the country. I pray for peace of the departed soul."
