The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh has expressed sorrow on the death of the legendary vocalist, M.S. Subbulakshmi. In a message the Prime Minister said:
"I join the nation in mourning with deep sadness the passing away of the great "MS" Bharat Ratna M.S. Subbulakshmi. She was truly the Nightingale of India. It was not an exaggeration when Mahatma Gandhi said, "Subbulakshmi, while singing, comes closer to God and the same happens to those who listen to her". Pandit Nehru said in her presence, "What am I, a mere Prime Minister, before the Queen of Music".
Generations of Indians have grown up listening to the mellifluous voice of MS, rendering both Carnatic and Hindustani music. Her rendering of Meera Bhajans and her favourite raga, Sankarabharanam, endeared her to millions of her admirers across the world. MS's genius was refined and crafted by her great sadhana, which was a unique combination of talent and piety.
I am deeply saddened by the passing away of this great soul, but everyone of us knows that her voice will ring true for centuries to come. I join her family, her disciples and her many admirers in mourning her demise."
