The Prime Minister has condoled the passing away of former Union Minister and veteran Congressman Shri Mahabir Prasad. In a condolence message to the late leaders daughter Smt Vimla Devi, Dr Manmohan Singh recalled Shri Mahabir Prasads commitment to public good and described him as a nationalist and a leader whose contribution to the cause of the underpriviledged will be long remembered.
The text of the Prime Ministers condolence message is as follows:
It is with great sadness and a sense of personal loss that I learnt of the passing away of your father, Shri Mahabir Prasad.
Shri Mahabir Prasadjis life was one of commitment to the public good.
A veteran Congressman, he started his political career as a student leader and was elected to the Ujarpur Panchayat in 1958 at a young age of 19 years. He entered the Uttar Pradesh Assembly in 1974 and was later elected to the Lok Sabha for four terms.
Shri Mahabir Prasadji served our country and people with hard work and dedication in various capacities. He was the Governor of Haryana in the nineties. Later he served as the Union Cabinet Minister for Small Scale Industries and Agro and Rural Industries in the first UP A government.
An educationist, Shri Mahabir Prasadji taught for 34 years in the Department of Geography, Gandhi Inter College, Mahuapur, Gorakhpur. He also contributed handsomely to the promotion of the National language Hindi.
In the passing away of Shri Mahabir Prasadji, we have lost a nationalist and a leader whose contribution to the cause of the underprivileged will be remembered for a very long time.
