Manipur
Development programmes and projects being taken up in Manipur coinciding with Prime Minister's visit
Manipur’s economy has suffered greatly from militancy and violence over the past several years. The lack of economic growth, employment opportunities and growth in infrastructure and public services has to be addressed for meeting the people’s aspirations. As part of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s initiatives to facilitate sustained development of the State through fresh investments, the following programmes and projects are being taken up:
I INFRASTRUCTURE
1. Jiribam – Tupul (near Imphal) railway line
2. Construction of a new State capital complex
3. Widening and improving 16 roads and double-laning of Maram – Paran Road for upgrading road infrastructure.
4. Development of mini-secretariats, residential quarters, internal roads and other amenities at seven district headquarters (all districts other than Imphal and the three headquarters of ADCs at Kangpokpi, Morch and Jiribam
5. Loktak downstream hydroelectric power project (90 MW)
6. Speedy completion of Khuga and Thoubal irrigation projects under Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme with external assistance for expanding irrigation
7. Construction of Dolaithabi Barrage under accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme with external assistance for expanding irrigation
8. All tribal villages in the State to be electrified during the next four years. This programme will be implemented on a priority basis
9. Establishing a sports complex at Khuman Lampak including one-time maintenance and repairs of existing facilities
II Education
10. Manipur University to be a Central University
11. College of Technology, Imphal to be a constituent college of the new Central University
12. Infrastructure development for the Government College of Technology
III Employment
13. Special employment generation Programme for concessionary loans to 15,000 persons for agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries, medical clinics, agri-clinics, pharmacies, small scale industries, trading businesses and services
IV Health
14. Manipur to be included among the States to be covered under a new initiative for improving rural health
V LPG Outlets
15. Opening LPG outlets in all sub-divisional headquarters
The Government of India will consider suitable reconstruction of the finances of the State after the recommendations of the 12th Finance Commission are received.
For flood control, assistance will be considered in the light of the report of the Task Force constituted following the Prime Minister’s announcement during visit to the northeast in July.
Extension of cellular network in Manipur up to sub-divisional level will be taken up subject to technical feasibility; the feasibility survey will be started soon.
