PM Constitutes Sardar Sarovar Project R&R Oversight Group

The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has given approval for setting up of Sardar Sarovar Project relief and rehabilitation oversight group. It will be a three-member panel chaired by Shri V.K. Shunglu, former Comptroller and Auditor General. Dr. J.P. Narayan, Convenor of Loksatta and Dr. G.K. Chadda, former Vice-Chancellor, JNU are the other two members. The Committee will have the following terms of reference:-

1. Conduct sample surveys to ascertain the status of rehabilitation and gather the following facts:

a. total number of families affected by submergence;

b. total number of families who have not received relief and rehabilitation package as per norms;

c. check, verify whether alternative land was offered to the oustees and verify whether it is true that those who did not take land voluntarily refused to do so.

2. The Committee has also been asked to recommend a system to ensure that all families who will be affected by submergence when the dam height is 121.92 mts., receive relief within three months as per the norms laid down by the Narmada Award, the Supreme Court and the Grievances Redressal Authority set up by the Madhya Pradesh Government.
