PM condoles the passing away of Lakshmi Sehgal
The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh has condoled the passing away of Smt. Lakshmi Sehgal , one of the last surviving members of the Indian National Army.
The Prime Minister, in condolence message described Smt. Lakshmi Sehgal as epitomizing the valour and sacrifice of Indian women and a voice of conscience that upheld and propagated secular and liberal values.
The text of the Prime Minister's message is as follows :
"I was deeply grieved to hear of the passing away of Smt. Lakshmi Sehgal. She was one of the last surviving members of the Indian National Army, whose brave exploits were a shining chapter in India's history. She was popularly known for her association with the Rani of Jhansi Regiment and she epitomized the valour and sacrifice of Indian women and the critical role they played in the freedom movement.
Even after India won freedom, she carried on her selfless service and patriotic duties through her medical practice and the support she provided to refugees after Partition and later in 1971.
In later years, she joined politics and was a voice of conscience that upheld and propagated secular and liberal values that were so dear to her; Lakshmi Sehgalji's life is a moving and inspiring testament to the highest values and ideals on which our nation is founded. Throughout her life, she responded selflessly to the call of national service and set an example for all citizens to follow.
I convey my deepest sympathies and condolences to her family, friends and well wishers."
